Los Lobos Welcomes Jeff Mattson & Syd Straw In New York City

East Los Angeles rockers Los Lobos kicked off a run of shows at City Winery in New York City on Saturday, where they welcomed special guests to share the stage. Dark Star Orchestra guitarist Jeff Mattson sat-in with the band as did singer-songwriter Syd Straw.

Los Lobos picked originals spanning their legendary 40+ year career. Such favorites as “Kiko & The Lavender Moon,” “Viking,” “The Valley” and “Cumbia Raza” were mixed with choice covers. Syd Straw contributed to the recent single “Made To Break Your Heart” and Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl.” Meanwhile, Mattson aided the group on their own “Don’t Worry Baby” as well as covers of “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone” by Traffic and “Bertha” by the Grateful Dead.

The start of the City Winery run came a few days after Los Lobos held up their end of a bargain with Umphrey’s McGee. As reported the bands made a friendly wager on the National League Championship Series. If the Chicago Cubs were to win Los Lobos would cover an Umphrey’s song, while the reverse would happen if the Los Angeles Dodgers won. Since the Cubs pulled it off Los Lobos wound up covering UM’s “Dear Lord” in Evanston on Thursday. Video/audio of the cover has yet to surface. Despite the Cubs win, UM guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss led a cover of Los Lobos’s “The Valley” as part of the pair’s holiday show in Chicago last weekend.
