Lake Street Dive Enters Boy Band Phase For Halloween 2024 Cover Video

Halloween means a lot of things to a lot of people. For Lake Street Dive it’s a time to embody another act as they have a decade-plus tradition of posting cover videos on October 31st. This year, the band embraced the music of the immortal Backstreet Boys by offering a fresh spin on the boy band’s 1999 hit “I Want It That Way.”

Lake Street Dive has now spent two consecutive Halloweens focusing on the ’90s as “I Want It That Way” came on the heels of 2023 selection “The Sign.” Ace of Base’s 1993 smash was the first song from the decade LSD picked for their annual video series.

Frontwoman Rachael Price dressed as Brian Littrell, keyboardist Akie Bermiss as Nick Carter, bassist Bridget Kearney as Howie Dorough, guitarist James Cornelison as Kevin Richardson and drummer Mike Calabrese as AJ McLean. All five members of Lake Street Dive showed off their vocal talents in mixing elements of the original BBoys’ stylings with their own singing skills.

Backstreet Boys released “I Want It That Way” as the lead single from their third studio album, Millennium. The pop ballad climbed to the six-slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, became the quintet’s signature song and earned Backstreet Boys three Grammy nominations.

Lake Street Dive’s version was an unplugged affair with Cornelison’s acoustic guitar the only instrumentation accompanying the voices of all five members. Past Lake Street Dive Halloween videos have included The B-52’s “Love Shack,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News,” Travelin’ Wilbury’s “Handle With Care,” The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down,” Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True,” Starland Vocal Band’s “Afternoon Delight” and the Mamas & Papas-popularized “Dedicated To The One I Love.”

Lake Street Dive kicks off a two-night stand in their hometown of Boston on December 13. The band then rings in 2025 with a two-show New Year’s Eve run at Chicago’s Salt Shed.
