Kelly Clarkson has used the “Kellyoke” segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show to cover songs from a diverse array of artists spanning many genres. Clarkson went the metal route by performing Metallica‘s “Sad But True” on Monday’s episode of the daytime talk show.
Actress Isla Fisher previously appeared as a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show in February and convinced the host to cover “Sad But True” for a future “Kellyoke” segment. “You should do ‘Sad But True,’ your voice would be amazing,” Fisher told Clarkson.
Metallica originally released “Sad But True” on their self-titled 1991 LP known by fans as The Black Album. Frontman/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich share writing credit. St. Vincent, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Sam Fender, Mexcian Institute of Sound, Royal Blood, White Reaper and YB each covered “Sad But True” for The Metallica Blacklist compilation in 2021.
Kelly Clarkson’s version of “Sad But True” starts in slow and moody fashion with the singer accompanied by a pianist. Then, Clarkson unleashes a long high note before the band kicks in and powers through a dark and hard-hitting arrangement.
Metallica thought enough of the cover to share the version on Instagram. “Simply amazing. Thank you Kelly!” wrote Metallica in a comment accompanying the Instagram post.
