St. Vincent Covers Metallica’s ‘Sad But True’
The cover and ‘The Metallica Blacklist’ compilation comes in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s ‘The Black Album.’

St. Vincent (Annie Clark) recorded a cover of Metallica‘s “Sad But True” for The Metallica Blacklist, a compilation celebrating the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s The Black Album. Clark’s version of “Sad But True” is out today before the complete The Metallica Blacklist featuring over 50 artists covering songs from The Black Album arrives via Blackened Recordings on September 10.
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Phoebe Bridgers, Miley Cyrus, My Morning Jacket, Chris Stapleton, Kamasi Washington and Rodrigo y Gabriela are among other acts who reimagined songs from The Black Album for The Metallica Blacklist. All proceeds from the compilation will benefit Metallica’s All Within My Hands charitable foundation as well as a charity selected by each participating artist. St. Vincent picked the North Texas Food Bank.
Metallica will also release 30th anniversary The Black Album reissues through their Blackened Recordings imprint on September 10. Options include a Deluxe Box Set featuring the album remastered on vinyl and CD, a “Sad But True” picture disc and three live LPs, 14 CDs and six DVDs chock full of previously unreleased content including live shows, rough mixes and demos. An MP3 download card will also purchasers to download all audio and the set comes packaged in a box with four tour laminates, lithos, guitar picks, a 120-page hardcover book and plenty of other goodies.
