Saxophonist Kamasi Washington has confirmed the September 29 release date of his previously announced EP Harmony Of Difference via Young Turks. The jazz musician has also confirmed a Fall Tour in support of the release.
The follow-up to Washington’s acclaimed 2015 debut triple album The Epic, the EP features an original six part suite presented as five separate movements. Said to be the bandleader’s study of counterpoint, which he describes as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies” the final song on the six-track EP combines the previous five moments into a singular piece entitled “The Truth.”
Kamasi’s sister Amani Washington created coinciding paintings for each of the movements that when compiled together form an abstract human face. The paintings were incorporated into a film directed by A.G. Rojas that recently premiered at the Whitney Biennial.
Washington and his band will tour in support of Harmony Of Difference beginning on November in Milwaukee. Additional Midwest stops that month include Madison, Minneapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, Urbana and Detroit. The tour continues on November 16 in Toronto, followed by North East run through Northampton, Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Washington will then head to Cincinnati and Charlottesville, as well as Richmond on December 1. The rest of the month finds Kamasi performing in Raleigh, Asheville, Birmingham, Athens, Atlanta, Nashville, Louisville and a final night on December 11 in Memphis.
