This summer saxophonist Kamasi Washington will issue a new EP Harmony Of Difference via Young Turks. Washington shared the EP’s sixth movement, the single “Truth.”
Presented as five separate movements, the six-track EP culminates with the combining of the movements as one piece, the single “Truth.” The follow-up to Washington’s 2015 debut triple album The Epic is said to be the bandleader’s study of counterpoint, which he describes as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.”
The movements inspired five paintings by Kamasi’s sister Amani Washington that when put together create an abstract human face. The paintings were incorporated into a film directed by A.G. Rojas that recently premiered at the Whitney Biennial.
