Last night the Apollo Theater hosted the Jazz Foundation Of America’s A Great Night In Harlem Every Day I Have The Blues Gala Concert that featured a number of performers including the John Mayer Trio. The performance at the famed Harlem venue marked the first by the trio since 2014.
Revered New Orleans musician Dr. John also performed and was honored as the recipient of the Hank Jones Award. Steel guitarist Robert Randolph, blues guitarist Robert Cray and actor/blues performer Bruce Willis were also on the bill.
Guitarist John Mayer, drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino last performed as the John Mayer Trio during at 2014 appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Since then Mayer has shared social media updates indicating the combo has been in the studio recording together.
Thursday’s set featured a cover of B.B. King’s “Everyday I Have The Blues,” followed by their “Vultures” and “Gravity.” The trio expanded to welcome Cray on guitar and vocals for a take on his “Chicken In The Kitchen.” Randolph then joined in the action on a collaborative rendition of King’s “Let The Good Times Roll” that saw several of the night’s other performers also return to the stage. Footage of the set posted to Facebook by rockstarrichard was uploaded in the video below:
