While tributes to Tina Turner have been pouring in since the music icon died on Wednesday at age 83, a particularly special one came last night from John Fogerty at his concert in Manchester, England. Fogerty honored the “Queen Of Rock ‘n’ Roll” with a performance of “Proud Mary,” a song he wrote that put Tina Turner on the map.

John Fogerty, who was the frontman for Creedence Clearwater Revival, penned “Proud Mary” in 1967 upon receiving his discharge papers from the National Guard. CCR released the original version in 1969 both as a single and on their sophomore studio album, Bayou Country. The single went all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ike & Tina Turner put an inventive spin on “Proud Mary” that showcased the latter’s powerful and dynamic pipes. Their arrangement was issued as a single in 1971 after appearing on the 1970 album Workin’ Together. Ike & Tina Turner’s version peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group in 1972. It was a focal part of the duo’s concert and remained well associated with Tina after she left Ike.

John Fogerty brought his band, which includes sons Shane Fogerty and Tyler Fogerty, to Manchester’s AO Arena on Thursday, where he dedicated the “Proud Mary” finale to Tina Turner. The 77-year-old musician addressed the crowd before the last song of the evening, stating:

“We just have lost the ‘Queen Of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ Tina Turner. I toured with Tina way back about the year 2000. Of course, Tina recorded my song, ‘Proud Mary,’ way back around 1971 and it was a breakthrough song for her. Also a signature song. Man, I saw her on TV every week with that red dress on and the Ikette girls dancing in the background. She was amazing and I’d like to dedicate doing ‘Proud Mary’ … this is my first good song I ever wrote … I’d like to dedicate this to Tina Turner.”

Fogerty wisely stuck with his arrangement of “Proud Mary.” Watch the dedication and “Proud Mary” performance via fan-shot video below:
