Lizzo took the stage in Phoenix last night on the same day Tina Turner died at age 83. The Detroit native honored the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” with a stirring performance of “Proud Mary” during her show on Wednesday at the Footprint Center.
“Today, we lost an icon,” Lizzo told the crowd. “And I haven’t allowed myself to be sad. I haven’t allowed myself to cry about it. And I don’t want to right now because I’d much rather celebrate the incredible legend Tina Turner is and always will be. As a Black girl in a rock band, I would not exist if it was not for the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Lizzo went on to shout “There would be no rock ‘n’ roll without Tina Turner!” three times. The pop star then fronted her band on “Proud Mary” in the same style as Ike & Tina Turner’s arrangement of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic. CCR’s original was released in 1969. Ike & Tina Turner put out their version as the second single from the 1970 album Workin’ Together.
