Jim James And M. Ward Reunite With Monsters Of Folk Band Mate Conor Oberst At Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

My Morning Jacket front man Jim James not only performed a solo set on Friday in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park as part of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, but he also sat-in with Conor Oberst. Conor closed out the Rooster Stage on Friday with a 75-minute set that featured a Monsters Of Folk reunion of sorts including Jim James and M. Ward.

Monsters Of Folk was formed by M. Ward, Jim James, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis in 2004, though they didn’t put out their first and to date only studio album and tour until 2009. Oberst, James and Ward reunited in July during M. Ward’s set at the Hollywood Bowl, and the threesome collaborated once more during Conor’s set on Friday at HSB ’16. The trio and Oberst guitarist Megan McCormick (once again Mogis didn’t take part) shared the stage on “Say Please” and “Whole Lotta Losin’,” a pair of tracks from the 2009 Monsters Of Folk album. “If you close your eyes, it’s gonna be 2009 all over again,” Oberst said as per Riff Magazine.

Earlier in the day Jim James presented a set that featured a mix of material from both of his solo albums: 2013’s Regions of Light and Sound of God and the upcoming Eternally Even.
