Watch Jim James Join Fleet Foxes For Buffalo Springfield Cover At Hollywood Bowl

Fleet Foxes and My Morning Jacket made it to Hollywood Bowl on Monday after the original co-headline date on August 20 was postponed due to Hurricane Hilary. Fleet Foxes’ set saw MMJ frontman Jim James joining for a Neil Young-penned Buffalo Springfield cover while FF frontman Robin Pecknold returned the favor on an MMJ number.

James joined Fleet Foxes toward the end of their set — which came before MMJ’s at the Bowl — for Neil Young’s ethereal Buffalo Springfield song, “Expecting To Fly.” While included on Buffalo Springfield’s 1967 album Buffalo Springfield Again, the only member of the band who plays on it is its writer Neil Young alongside sessions players and produced by Jack Nitzsche. The members of Buffalo Springfield had a tempestuous relationship and “Expecting To Fly” came at a time when Neil had actually left the band although the song was included on the album anyway.

In a similar fashion as they did with Young’s “Comes A Time” at the Greek Theatre Berkeley, James and Pecknold delivered spot on harmonies on “Expecting To Fly” and both played acoustic guitars. Watch Jim James join Fleet Foxes for “Expecting To Fly” below:

Elsewhere in Fleet Foxes’ set the Seattle-born band offered two songs from their latest studio album, 2020’s Gramm-nominated Shore, with “Sunblind” and “Can I Believe You.” The group also delivered additional favorites like “Ragged Wood,” “White Winter Hymnal,” “Mykonos,” “Blue Ridge Mountains” and set closer “Helplessness Blues.”

MMJ kicked off their set with the staple, “Wordless Chorus.” The band continued with “Off The Record” (which contained an extended outro), “Spring (Among the Living)” and “Gideon” before Pecknold joined MMJ for “Wonderful (The Way I Feel) from the latter’s 2011 album, Circuital. The sit-in saw Robin and Jim beginning the song on acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies once again before the rest of MMJ joined in.

Jacket also offered a tune from their 2021 self-titled studio album, “Love Love Love.” MMJ closed their set with favorites “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2,” “One Big Holiday” and “Dancefloors.”
