Jeff Tweedy Covers Nirvana & Jimi Hendrix In Seattle

Given past experience, fans attending Jeff Tweedy’s current tour can count on the Wilco frontman and his solo band covering songs associated with the location they are playing as they make their way from city to city. Last night in Seattle, local legends Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix were selected for the evening’s salute.

With his typical sense of humor and sarcasm, Tweedy explained the approach to covering songs last night in Seattle.

“We play at least one song,” Tweedy said. “We usually try and pick something that’s by an artist from wherever we are or the state, wherever we are, but it gets rough some places, I will say. There are some places where there are nobody from. That’s the proper syntax … Anyway, Seattle is one of those places where there’s really little music to pick from.”

Touring in support of his 2025 solo album, Twilight Override, Tweedy’s prior cover tributes have occurred at stops in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Des Moines, London, Antwerp (Belgium), Memphis and New York City, among many others.

Tweedy frequently hands off lead singing duties to one of the other members of the band when the location-appropriate covers come out during encores. On Thursday at Seattle’s Moore Theatre, guitarist Liam Kazar sang lead on Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary.” Tweedy sang lead on Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” with backing support from his bandmates.

Along with Kazar, Tweedy’s current backing band comprises his sons, drummer Spencer Tweedy and keyboardist Sammy Tweedy, as well as bassist Sima Cunningham and guitarist Macie Stewart. Scroll on to watch footage of last night’s covers in Seattle.
