Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy’s current solo tour rolled into Ventura, California, for a concert last night at The Majestic Ventura Theater. Maintaining an approach seen at many other tour stops, Tweedy covered a song associated with the location – Neil Young’s Topanga Canyon anthem “After The Gold Rush” – while also digging out a rarely played Uncle Tupelo song.
In addition to covering songs that fit the show’s location, Tweedy has also often passed lead vocal duties off to other members of the band for the one-offs. Jeff son, keyboardist Sammy Tweedy, sang “After The Gold Rush” last night as the encore’s second song.
“After The Gold Rush” was the title track to Neil Young’s 1970 album, which was partially recorded nearby at Young’s former home studio in the Topanga Canyon region outside Los Angeles.
The encore continued with the elder Tweedy mining the catalog of his pre-Wilco group Uncle Tupelo and pulling out “The Long Cut.” Tweedy wrote “The Long Cut” for the final Uncle Tupelo album, 1993’s Anodyne.
