Jason Isbell Covers Tom Petty With Jerry Douglas At Ryman Finale

By Andy Kahn Oct 16, 2017 12:00 pm PDT

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit wrapped a six-show residency at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Sunday night. The band was joined by dobro master Jerry Douglas on their sixth Tom Petty cover performed during the run.

Each night of The Ryman residency saw Isbell incorporate a cover of a Tom Petty song during each evening’s encore. Monday saw “Refugee” and Tuesday’s show featured “You Wreck Me” while Wednesday night brought out “Room At The Top.” Friday’s concert saw a reprise of “American Girl” and Saturday’s show included “Listen To Her Heart.”

Sunday’s main set was made up of tracks from the recently issued album The Nashville Sound with other cuts from throughout Isbell’s solo career. Rarities such as “Flagship,” “Grown” and “In A Razor Town” were performed for the only time during the run as part of Sunday’s set. Local dobro player Jerry Douglas was onstage at the start of last night’s encore as Isbell & The 400 Unit offered their arrangement of Petty’s “You Got Lucky.” The band and guest finished off the show and the residency with “Children Of Children.”
