Plants And Animals: Waltzed In From Rumbling

A few weeks back I featured some excellent indie rock albums that might be worth a listen. Seems like it might be time to round up a few more in that category. Plants and Animals are a Montreal band who first caught my ear a few years back with The End Of That, but then kind of fell off the radar, disappearing as many good bands do. Well, thankfully they are back, and back with an album worth waiting for. Waltzed In From Rumbling is an LP that shows off their won’t-be-pigeonholed sound – part indie country folk, part expansive post rock. These are well-crafted, take-your-time songs worthy of placement in your summertime playlist. Enjoy!

New Madrid: Magnetkingmagnetqueen

Sometimes there’s just too much good music and I don’t get around to rec’ing everything on my list. That’s what happened with New Madrid’s last album, Sunswimmer, which I always wanted to RecommNed a couple years ago, but never fit it in. Thankfully, the Athens indie-rockers are back with the just-as-good-actually-better Magnetkingmagnetqueen. The album is overflowing with interesting takes on old ideas: off-kilter syncopated rhythms and heady guitar solos breaking molds and carving out new space in the let’s-listen-to-that-song-one-more-time genre. With dashes of krautrock and psychedelic and plenty of room to breathe, this is indie rock for jammers.

Brass Bed: In the Yellow Leaf

Sometimes all you need is great songs. Easier said than done, of course, but Brass Bed seems to have a particular knack for them. The Louisiana band is back with the excellent In The Yellow Leaf, each song revealing little surprises along with its punchy hooks and poetic imagery. Sometimes you just got to set the adjectives aside and keep it simple: this is good music.
