Eerie Wanda: Hum

While it can sometimes seem like the music operating under the “indie” umbrella is stuck in a rut, there are still plenty of bands doing some seriously indie-resting, er, interesting stuff. This week taking a look at a pair worth a listen, starting with Eerie Wanda. Hum, their release on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond is a strong debut for the Amsterdam band. Soaked in the lovely, narcotic vocals of Marina Tadic, the album also features members of Jacco Gardner’s rhythm section, giving the exotic melodies that extra baroque-pop kick. This is a slow-creeper record that slowly unfolds to reveal itself.
Working For A Nuclear Free City: What Do People Do All Day?

Next up, out of Manchester, United Kingdom is Working for a Nuclear Free City, whose newest LP What Do People Do All Day is a study in variety. Between the first two tracks, you hear a sample of an old-school radio switching between stations which is an apt description of this album which bounces between styles and subgenres with the restless twitch of someone looking for something good to listen to. So the sound bounces between funky electro-disco, moody atmospherics, plaintive folk and even some Garcia-esque guitar riffage. A lot of mileage and a lot of fun over these 14 tracks.
