Happy Birthday Jennifer Hartswick: 5 Stellar JHa Sit-Ins

By Andy Kahn Aug 18, 2016 12:01 pm PDT

For several years Jennifer Hartswick has been a constant presence in the jam scene and today the multi-talented trumpeter and vocalist is celebrating her birthday. Tonight, Jennifer will sing the National Anthem with Sunshine Becker and Tim Flannery at AT&T Park in San Francisco as part of the Giants’ Jerry Garcia Tribute Night, which also includes a performance by Moonalice. Ahead of this evening’s collaboration and in honor of Jennifer’s birthday, below is a collection of five instances in recent years where she’s supplied guest trumpet or vocals (or both) alongside some of the jam scene’s most beloved acts.

Since 2001 Hartwick’s been a nearly constant figure and integral element of the Trey Anastasio Band horn section. In the prevailing years JHa’s profile has continued to rise as the leader of her own band and as an often called upon guest performer, having joined likes of The Allman Brothers Band, Phish, Soulive, Umphrey’s McGee, Tea Leaf Green and many others.

On April 11, 2014 The Allman Brothers Band performed at the Wanee Festival in Live Oak, Florida. The veteran rock band welcomed Trey Anastasio to sit-in on guitar as well as JHa on trumpet and Kofi Burbridge on flute. The resulting “Who’s Been Talking” was captured by skip2eight and can be viewed below – watch Jennifer take a solo at 6:50 in the video:

Anastasio first brought Hartswick to the Phish stage in Las Vegas in April 2004 for a cover of Jay Z’s “Girls Girls Girls.” JHa again sat-in with Trey and Phish at the 2014 Dick’s run in Colorado. Along with her TAB mate Natalie Cressman on trombone, Jennifer added trumpet to a first set closing take on “Suzy Greenberg,” captured by LazyLightning55a In the superb footage below:

Last year progressive funk trio Soulive held their annual Bowlive residency at Brooklyn Bowl. Their March 14 performance included Hartswick sitting-in on a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean.” Here’s JHa showing off her best Robert Plant chops captured by Barry2theB:

A regular guest of Umphrey’s McGee dating back to 2005, JHa and UM have shared stages all across the United States and beyond. Hartswick was a guest again at this year’s UMBowl VII held in May at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas. The two-show stand in Sin City featured Jennifer sans-trumpet handling lead vocals on Sade’s “No Ordinary Love” during the second night. Watch official video of the sit-in here:

Though featuring a now outdated Tea Leaf Green lineup, this clip showcases Hartswick joining the group back in 2010 at the All Good Festival. TLG made news this week when they revealed changes in band membership as well as their first tour of 2016. Here’s pro-shot footage of the long running Bay Area jam act performing “Georgie P” with Jennifer at All Good:
