Greensky Bluegrass‘ Winter Tour 2023 has seen numerous acts open for the band over the course of the run. Friday’s first of two concerts at The Anthem in Washington D.C. saw Railroad Earth kick off the action with members of RRE joining the headliners for a pair of collaborations later in the evening.
The first collaboration came at the end of Greensky Bluegrass’ first set, when Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone added fiddle and John Skehan played mandolin on a cover of Grateful Dead classic “Let It Grow.” Greensky Bluegrass debuted their take on the song penned by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow at their Halloween celebration at The Warfield in San Francisco on October 29, 2022.
Friday’s “Let It Grow” was Greensky’s second performance of the tune. Tim Carbone took an effusive fiddle solo before John Skehan and GSBG mandolinist Paul Hoffman engaged in a stellar back-and-forth before dobroist Anders Beck delivered an impressive solo of his own.

The second and final guest appearance of the night took place in the middle of Greensky’s second set on Friday when Railroad Earth guitarist/vocalist Todd Sheaffer led GSBG on “The Hunting Song.” Sheaffer wrote “The Hunting Song” with Patrick Fitzsimmons and Brady Rymer. Greensky previously performed “The Hunting Song” on December 2, 2009 as per Phantasy Tour. Todd Sheaffer also sat-in on the version played 1,387 GSBG shows prior.

GSBG’s collaborations with members of Railroad Earth came amid a show heavy on staples including “All Four,” “Past My Prime,” “Jaywalking,” “Burn Them” and “The Four.” The quintet also twice slipped “One Slip” within “Tarpology” and sealed the evening with an encore of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You.”
