The latest in the Grateful Dead’s All The Years Live video series is a performance of “West L.A. Fadeaway” featuring Steve Miller and Norton Buffalo. The footage is from the band’s July 1, 1992 show at Ohio’s Buckeye Lake Music Center.
“West L.A. Fadeaway” appears on the Grateful Dead’s 1987 album In The Dark. The song existed in the GD’s live setting since August 28, 1982, as Dead archivist David Lemieux noted.
“‘West L.A. Fadeaway’ joined the repertoire in August 1982, and quickly became a favourite first set song in the repertoire,” Lemieux wrote. “It was played live a full five years before it was released on In The Dark in its definitive studio recording.”

The ’92 “West L.A. Fadeaway” at Buckeye came in the second set, just one of three times the In The Dark cut arrived in a second frame, as per JerryBase (the song’s debut in ‘82 was in the second set). The Buckeye ’92 rendition also marked the last time “West L.A.” appeared in the second set.
Additionally distinguishing the ‘92 Ohio “Fadeaway” were guest musicians guitarist Steve Miller and Norton Buffalo on harmonica. Watch below:
