Hear Gov’t Mule’s Potent ‘Dreaming Out Loud’ Single Featuring Ivan Neville & Ruthie Foster

Gov’t Mule confirmed details of their 12th studio album, Peace…Like A River, which arrives via Fantasy Records on June 16. The quartet fronted by guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes previewed the 12-song collection by releasing its lead single, “Dreaming Out Loud,” featuring contributions from keyboardist/vocalist Ivan Neville and vocalist Ruthie Foster.

Peace…Like A River was recorded at Waterford, Connecticut’s The Power Station New England as part of the same sessions that yielded 2021’s Grammy-nominated album Heavy Load Blues. Each LP was made in separate rooms utilizing different gear and instruments to give them their own spirit and personalities. The band — Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis — tapped John Paterno to co-produce both albums with Warren.

Warren Haynes was inspired both instrumentally and lyrically by what he described as “the golden era of rock, soul, jazz and blues” on Peace…Like A River. Additional guests besides Neville and Foster to appear on the album include Billy F Gibbons, Billy Bob Thornton and Celisse.

“Peace…Like A River is very ambitious from a musical arrangement standpoint in the way that a lot of the songs take twists and turns that is not common in today’s pop music world,” explained Haynes. “At the same time, it’s very much a song record and covers a lot of ground, stylistically speaking. Song for song maybe my favorite one.”

Haynes blended inspirational words spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, John Lewis and John F. Kennedy into the “Dreaming Out Loud” lyrics. Warren, Ivan Neville and Ruthie Foster share lead vocal duties while bombastic horns blare and the rhythm section kicks out a hard-driving rhythm.
