Gov’t Mule‘s spring tour moved to Cleveland on Tuesday for a show at TempleLive at Cleveland Masonic. The quartet devoted their encore to honoring Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper as they covered two songs by “The Godfather Of Shock Rock.”

Multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis had a guitar in hand for last night’s encore and exchanged solos with Warren Haynes during both tunes. Warren, Danny and bandmates bassist Jorgen Carlsson and drummer Matt Abts started the Alice Cooper tribute by working through “Is It My Body.” Cooper’s original is featured on the Detroit native’s breakthrough 1971 album, Love It To Death. Mule last played the song at the private pre-jam concert in Asheville on December 9, 2022. “Is It My Body” was previously performed publicly by the quartet on July 18, 2019 in Kansas City.

“Is It My Body” was the b-side of Alice Cooper’s massively successful “I’m Eighteen” single, which came out before both songs appeared on Love It To Death. So it was fitting Mule followed “Is It My Body” by dusting off “I’m Eighteen” for the first time since January 21, 2019 to close last night’s concert. Haynes handled lead vocals on both and once again dueled with Louis on the latter.

The Alice Cooper tribute came after Gov’t Mule delivered two sets mixing career-spanning originals and a few choice covers. The four-piece previewed their forthcoming Peace...Like A River album by performing singles “Dreaming Out Loud” and “Same As It Ever Was” before the “Kind Of Bird” that ended last night’s first set. Highlights from the second set included a 16-minute “Game Face” featuring a “Mountain Jam” excursion, an extended take on The Beatles’ “She Said, She Said” and a particularly potent “Bring On The Music.”

Gov’t Mule continues the tour tomorrow in Ashland, Kentucky. On Friday, the band plays Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium for the first time since 2015 with “surprise special guests” expected. nugs.net subscribers can watch a free livestream.

This summer, the group will bring back their tribute to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon album for the last time.
