Gov’t Mule rolled out the expansive new single “Same As It Ever Was.” The song opens the band’s forthcoming studio album, Peace...Like A River.
Produced by Jon Paterno and Mule frontman Warren Haynes, Peace…Like A River is due out June 16 via Fantasy Records. The 12-song album, Gov’t Mule’s 12th, is the follow up to and was recorded at the same time as 2021’s Heavy Load Blues. Both LPs were tracked at The Power Station New England in different rooms and using different setups at the Waterford, Connecticut facility.

Haynes and bandmates bassist Jorgen Carlsson, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis previously released Peace…Like A River’s lead single, “Dreaming Out Loud.” Ivan Neville and Ruthie Foster contributed to the song with other guests on the album including Billy F Gibbons, Billy Bob Thornton and Celisse.
Warren Haynes shared the following in regards to “Same As It Ever Was”:
“‘Same As It Ever Was’ is such an opus, an expansive piece. It goes in all these different directions, but lyrically and conceptually it makes sense to be the opening track. Life throws challenges at you when you least expect it, but in some ways, the disruption of the lockdown period is no different than what could happen at any given moment. We’ve all dealt with what in some cases seem like insurmountable hardships, but in my lifetime, the pandemic is the first time that the entire planet went through it together. The whole message of the tune is we’ve come a long way, but now we’re on the other side and life is normal, life is good. Same as it ever was.”
