Beck, Bad Bunny & Yasiin Bey Among Many Guests Joining Gorillaz At Coachella Weekend 2

Coachella’s second weekend presented another Gorillaz performance whose guest list this time included Beck, Bad Bunny and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def). The virtual band led by Damon Albarn was joined by several other returning guests including De La Soul, Thundercat, Del the Funky Homosapien and Bootie Brown.

Held on Friday, April 21, Gorillaz first welcomed Beck to the Coachella stage for “The Valley of the Pagans.” Beck was featured on the recording of the song that appeared on Gorillaz’s 2020 album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. Beck also joined Gorillaz last week at an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live for a performance of “Possession Island,” off the recently released Gorillaz album, Cracker Island.

The next guest to join Albarn last Friday at Coachella was Thundercat (bassist Stephen Bruner) who came out to play his part on the Cracker Island title track. Bad Bunny was next to join Albarn onstage for the Cracker Island cut “Tormenta.”

Moonchild Sanelly and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble were then brought out for “With Love to an Ex.” The horns stuck around as Yasiin Bey was tapped to provide his part on “Sweepstakes” from the 2010 Gorillaz LP, Plastic Beach. First-weekend collaborator Bootie Brown was brought back for “New Gold” and “Dirty Harry,” while Little Simz made her first appearance on “Garage Palace.” Rapper Del the Funky Homosapien once again joined Gorillaz on “Rock the House” and the set closer “Clint Eastwood.”

Like the previous weekend, the surviving members of De La Soul, Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer and Vincent “Maseo” Mason, were summoned for the penultimate song of the set to perform their parts on “Feel Good Inc.” The performance was dedicated to De La Soul co-founder David “Trugoy The Dove” Jolicoeur, who died in February at age 54.
