Pigeons Playing Ping Pong continued their Presto Winter Tour at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday night. PPPP welcomed guitarist Rick Mitarotonda of opening band Goose halfway through the first set.
Pigeons’ Greg Ormont prefaced the opener, “Porcupine,” by saying “I propose we get funky and weird immediately,” which they proceeded to do. The staples “Henrietta” and “Whirled” followed before the band brought out Mitarotonda for “Lightning.” PPPP had previously welcomed Rick as well as Goose keyboardist Peter Anspach on the tune in San Francisco last month. This time around the collab showed off a little choreography to close out the groove track. Next up, “Landing,” before “Zydeko” led into an instrumental “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” ahead of a return to “Zydeko” to bring the first frame to a close.
New tune “Lost In Line” kicked off the second set, making just its 7th appearance since debuting in late 2019. Another relatively new song, “Overrun,” — appearing on the band’s 2020 album Presto — came next ahead of more Presto material in “King Kong” which segued into the Stevie Wonder classic “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” before heading back to “King Kong.” “Whoopie,” “Bad For You” and the classic “Horizon” came next ahead of the second set closer “Sunny Day.” “Avalanche” would serve as the encore.
