Dinosaur Jr. took the stage in Seattle last night, where they welcomed Dave Matthews Band frontman Dave Matthews for a rousing rendition of Neil Young‘s “Cortez The Killer” to end the main set. Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron and Mudhoney singer Mark Arm also made guest appearances during the trio’s first of two nights at the Neptune Theatre.
Dinosaur Jr.’s Seattle shows as well as a pair of concerts in Portland, Oregon last weekend conclude a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band’s album Where You Been. Guitarist/vocalist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph have been joined by a diverse slate of guest artists at the celebratory performances towards the end of 2023 and now into 2024. Matthews, Cameron and Arm’s collaborations with Dinosaur Jr. followed sit-ins from Stephen Malkmus, Peter Holmström, Bryan Giles and Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock during a run on January 13 and 14 at Portland’s Revolution Hall.

Mascis, Barlow and Murph kicked off Wednesday’s concert by running through each song featured on Where You Been. After performances of “Garden” and “Little Fury Things,” Matt Cameron began the parade of guest stars. Cameron took Murph’s spot behind the kit on the Bug cut “Yeah We Know.”
Mark Arm emerged following Cameron’s appearance to lead Dinosaur Jr. through The Stooges classics “Real Cool Time” and “T.V. Eye.” Seattle area resident Dave Matthews then came out to front the 13-minute “Cortez The Killer.” Matthews also played acoustic guitar on the song from Neil Young’s 1975 album, Zuma.
“Cortez The Killer” was used for collaborations with Warren Haynes and Jason Isbell as well as Kurt Vile and Lee Ranaldo last fall in Brooklyn. An encore of “Feel The Pain” and “Freak Scene” punctuated last night’s Dinosaur Jr. show.
