Last night, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds gave their first of three headlining performances at Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Riviera Maya 2026 in Cancún, Mexico. The pair brought out Trampled by Turtles to help them salute Bob Weir with covers of the Grateful Dead favorites “Friend Of The Devil” and “Casey Jones.”

Trampled by Turtles’ Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), Dave Simonett (guitar, vocals), Eamonn McLain (cello, vocals), Erik Berry (mandolin, vocals), Ryan Young (violin, vocals) and Tim Saxhaug (bass, vocals) emerged halfway through Matthews & Reynolds’ set at the Moon Palace Resort. The string band and the Dave Matthews Band mates initially connected on “Friend Of The Devil.” While the song from the Grateful Dead’s legendary 1970 album American Beauty was a Dave & Tim debut, DMB covered “Friend Of The Devil” once on July 4, 2015 with special guest Béla Fleck to commemorate the Fare Thee Well Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead run.

Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds had TbT stick around for “Casey Jones.” Matthews had never before performed the track from the Grateful Dead’s other iconic 1970 album, Workingman’s Dead, in any format. Both covers were played to acknowledge Bobby Weir's death. The Grateful Dead guitarist passed away earlier this month at age 78.

Trampled by Turtles weren’t the only act on the lineup to join Dave & Tim on Thursday. Joy Oladokun also lent her voice to the duo’s take on the Daniel Lanois song “The Maker” later in the evening.

Earlier in the night, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds kicked off the 26-song performance with their first-ever two-man version of the Jimmy Buffett classic “A Pirate Looks At Forty.” The concert also featured the Tim & Dave debut of “Idea Of You” from DMB’s 2018 Come Tomorrow album. Plenty of oldies were also trotted out by the pair on Thursday, including “Seek Up,” “The Best Of What’s Around,” “Everyday,” “Raven,” “Gravedigger” and “Grey Street,” among others.

Dave Matthews returned to the stage alone to begin the encore with a solo “Here On Out.” Reynolds then assisted Matthews on the show-closing “Lie In Our Graves.” Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Riviera Maya 2026 continues tonight and runs through tomorrow.
