Daughter of Swords (Alex Sauser-Monning) explores financial inequalities on the new single “Money Hits.” The track, which takes on capitalism with a wink, appears on the forthcoming Daughter of Swords album Alex.

The long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Dawnbreaker is due on April 11 via Sylvan Esso's Psychic Hotline imprint. Sauser-Monning recruited their Mountain Man and The A’s bandmate Amelia Meath to contribute to Alex, which also features longtime friends/collaborators Jenn Wasner, Nick Sanborn, TJ Maiani and Caleb Wright. The 12-song collection was recorded at Betty’s — the Chapel Hill, North Carolina studio built by Sylvan Esso.

Alex Sauser-Monning shared the following in regards to “Money Hits”:

“‘Money Hits’ is a song about financial striving, the fact that capitalism is a joke and everyone at the bottom is living its appalling punchline, but that nature will have the last laugh on all of us. Money is imaginary—a deadly and expensive roadblock at every turn for the poor, but so abundant as to almost become air for the affluent (‘floating, flying, shimmering, diving like a bird on the wing’). It’s also so imaginary that as the consequences of our inability to get off fossil fuels passes tipping points, no one will be able to buy their way back to a livable world (‘running through the woods while the water rises…’).”

“Money Hits” comes on the heels of previously shared Alex previews “Talk To You” and “Alone Together.” Watch Daughter of Swords’ “Money Hits” lyric video below:
