Daughter of Swords, the project of singer-songwriter Alex Sauser-Monnig (Mountain Man, The A’s), announced a new album, Alex, out on April 11 via Sylvan Esso’s imprint Psychic Hotline. Sauser-Monnig previewed the new record with the single “Talk To You,” which arrived with a music video directed by SE’s Amelia Meath.

Alex follows Sauser-Monnig’s Daughter of Swords debut album, Dawnbreaker. The singer-songwriter has since been busy collaborating with Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath in both Mountain Man—also featuring Molly Sarlé—and The A’s.

Sauser-Monnig tapped Meath and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn to contribute to Alex, which was captured at SE’s Chapel Hill, North Carolina studio, Betty’s. Additional contributors include Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), TJ Maiani (Weyes Blood) and Caleb Wright (Hippo Campus).

Press materials further detailed Alex:

A reassessment of inner systems, and relationships of all sorts—with art and creativity, with other humans, with gender—happened in tandem with Sauser-Monnig’s interrogation of the late-capitalist culture that makes life for working artists an inequitable grind. Forced out of their habitual ways of thinking and being, Sauser-Monnig found new energy in dissolving old limitations—be they about the music business or their concept of gender—and exploring in uncharted territory. Their priority became maximizing the mood of each track, borne out in Alex’s layers of synthetic textures and unorthodox flourishes.

Sauser-Monnig previously released the Alex cut, “Alone Together.” An additional preview, “Talk To You,” arrived with the album announcement as well as a music video directed by Amelia Meath. Watch below:
