Brandi Carlile & Nickel Creek Cover ‘Mama Tried’ At Mothership Weekend 2024
Watch the collaborative take on the Merle Haggard favorite down in Florida.

Collaboration was again a constant theme throughout Brandi Carlile’s Mothership Weekend 2024. Fest performers Nickel Creek got in on the sit-in action, accompanying Carlile and her band on a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried.”
Haggard’s song fittingly coincided with the event coinciding with Mother’s Day Weekend. Haggard released “Mama Tried” in 1968 and it soon became a staple of country music and beyond, notably played regularly by the Grateful Dead.

The members of Nickel Creek – guitarist Sean Watkins, fiddler Sara Watkins, and mandolinist Chris Thile – gave the arrangement of “Mama Tried” a bit of a bluegrass flare.
