Bonnie Raitt delivered a Mother’s Day performance at Brandi Carlile’s Mothership Weekend 2024. Carlile joined the guitarist for a standout cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” at Seascape Golf Course in Miramar, Florida on Sunday.
While John Prine wrote “Angel From Montgomery” and included the song on his 1971 self-titled debut album, Bonnie Raitt made it her own — recording “Angel From Montgomery” for her 1974 LP Streetlights.
Here’s Bonnie on the beloved tune in a 2000 interview:
“I think ‘Angel From Montgomery’ probably has meant more to my fans and my body of work than any other song, and it will historically be considered one of the most important ones I’ve ever recorded. It’s just such a tender way of expressing that sentiment of longing – like ‘Hello In There’ – without being maudlin or obvious. It has all the different shadings of love and regret and longing. It’s a perfect expression from [a] wonderful genius.”

Raitt delivered the song at Mothership Weekend 2024 as the penultimate performance of her set. Carlile emerged and said, “What do you think of your audience Bonnie?”
“It’s incredible… I’ve never seen anything like it and I never will again. This is incredible,” Raitt said. Before adding, “We both love John Prine so much, we’re gonna sing this song for him in his honor and honoring all our mothers, many of whom didn’t get the choices we get to have in this generation. If we’re in a stuck marriage man, I would get the hell out of dodge. But this woman and many women don’t get that chance.”
Bonnie then began “Angel From Montgomery” on acoustic guitar and handled the first verse before Brandi joined her in harmony on the chorus. Brandi took the second verse before the pair brought the song home.

Raitt kicked off the set with her hit “Something To Talk About,” off her landmark 1991 album, Luck of the Draw. The guitarist also delivered covers from Bob Dylan (“Million Miles”) and Gerry Rafferty (“Right Down the Line”) along with “Made Up Mind” from her latest studio album, Just Like That…, halfway through her eight song set.
Raitt capped her Mothership Weekend 2024 performance with Luck of the Draw’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Bonnie Raitt kicks off a summer tour later this month. Check out her itinerary with ticket info below.
