Blackberry Smoke Teams With The Magpie Salute For Rolling Stones Cover In Ohio

On Tuesday night like-minded Southern rock acts Blackberry Smoke and The Magpie Salute concluded a brief two-night run together at EXPRESS LIVE! in Columbus, Ohio. As they did at Sunday’s show the two bands came together during the encore for a cover song that was in their collective wheelhouse.

The Magpie Salute opened the night in the Buckeye State with a 10-song set that was once again heavy on material from their forthcoming studio album High Water I. The band served up seven tunes from their new release along with covers of Rod Stewart’s “Every Picture Tells A Story” and “Laila Part 2” from German experimental krautrock band Agitation Free’s 1972 2nd.

Blackberry Smoke focussed the bulk of their headlining set on material 2012’s The Whipoorwill and Find A Light, which came out earlier this year, delivering five songs from each. All in all Charlie Starr & Co. managed to work in a cross-section of tunes from five of their studio efforts over the course of the 17-song set.

Just like they did on Sunday night in Maryland, BBS invited The Magpie Salute members Rich Robinson, Marc Ford, John Hogg and Sven Pipien to join them for the first song of their encore. Together, Blackberry Pie dug in on a meaty version of “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” from The Rolling Stones’ 1971 album Sticky Fingers. Hogg handled lead vocals with Starr and Ford adding backing vocals on the nearly nine-minute version of the tune.
