Blackberry Smoke Teams With The Magpie Salute For Little Feat Cover In Silver Spring

On Sunday, concert-goers at The Fillmore Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Maryland were treated to a night of rock featuring sets from The Magpie Salute and Blackberry Smoke. The bands’ first of two shows together ended with an encore that included a collaborative take on a Little Feat classic.

The Magpie Salute opened the evening with a performance heavy on material from their forthcoming studio album High Water I. Guitarists Rich Robinson and Marc Ford, bassist Sven Pipien, vocalist John Hogg, keyboardist Matt Slocum and drummer Joe Magistro included seven of the LP’s 12 tracks in their set. Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today” was the only cover The Magpie Salute played in Silver Spring.

Blackberry Smoke also focused on originals in Maryland. Charlie Starr & Co. performed five songs apiece from 2012’s The Whipoorwill and 2016’s Like An Arrow as well as four tunes from the recently released Find A Light. The band’s main set was heavy on staples including “Waiting For The Thunder,” “Sleeping Dogs,” “Fire In The Hole” and “Rock & Roll Again.”

When BBS returned for the encore they were joined by Rich Robinson, Marc Ford, John Hogg and Sven Pipien. The now nine-piece ensemble performed Little Feat’s “Fat Man In The Bathtub” featuring Hogg on lead vocals. Rich Robinson and Charlie Starr sang harmony, while Marc Ford played slide on the gem from 1973’s Dixie Chicken. Each band previously covered “Fat Man In The Bathtub” a handful of times in recent years. Blackberry Smoke went on to finish the evening with “Ain’t Much Left Of Me.”
