Bill Frisell Makes Phil Lesh & Friends Debut At Terrapin

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh has presented dozens of interesting Phil Lesh & Friends lineups over the past few years at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California; but last night may take the cake for jazz lovers as not only did guitarist Bill Frisell make his Phil & Friends debut but Medeski, Martin and Wood drummer Billy Martin was behind the kit.

Lesh, Frisell and Martin were joined by keyboardist Rob Barraco and guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz with Terrapin Crossroads regular Alex Koford providing vocals at points in the evening. The jazzy ensemble focused on Grateful Dead classics as well as a few choice covers including The Byrds’ “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and an instrumental rendition of “When You Wish Upon A Star.” Phil sang more than usual last night, while Koford and Barraco also chipped in vocally.

Bill Frisell returns to Terrapin Crossroads’ Grate Room tonight for a Bill Frisell’s Guitar In the Space Age! performance.
