Big Thief Unveils New Singles ‘Grandmother’ Featuring Laraaji & ‘Los Angeles’

A pair of new Big Thief singles dropped today ahead of the release of their upcoming album, Double Infinity, on September 5 via 4AD. The band shared “Grandmother,” featuring Laraaji on zither and backing vocals, and fellow album track, “Los Angeles.”

Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek and James Krivchenia recorded their soon-to-be-released sixth album in New York City at Power Station during nine-hour days of live recording. Longtime band collaborator Dom Monks produced, engineered and mixed the nine-track follow-up to 2022’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You.

Along with Laraaji, additional guests joining the trio during the three-week-long recording process included Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Mikel Patrick Avery and Mikey Buishas.

A description of the recording process detailed their participation:

Laraaji created drones with zither and an iPad and sang intuitive vocal melodies. Joshua Crumbly played bass; Mikey Buishas made live tape loops and played keys; Mikel Patrick Avery, Jon Nellen, and Caleb Michel played percussion; Adam Brisbin played guitar; and Hannah Cohen, June McDoom, and Alena Spanger sang background vocals.

The newly shared “Grandmother” is “the first song all three members of Big Thief wrote together.” Stream it and “Los Angeles” below.

Big Thief previously announced their 2025 Somersault Slide 360 Tour with performances across North America. The band’s first substantial run of shows in the United States in more than a year are slated to begin in September.
