Barenaked Ladies Make Room For Fastball & Sugar Ray After Storm Shortens Toledo Show

The headliners gave each support act a chance to perform their signature song after the threat of severe weather led to the cancellation of the opening sets.

Extreme weather has been one of the stories of the summer and live music certainly hasn’t been immune. Just ask the Steve Miller Band who blamed weather for the decision to cancel their 2025 tour or Bonnaroo attendees as this year’s festival was scrapped after only one day due to flooding.

Barenaked Ladies are currently on the road with Fastball and Sugar Ray for the Last Summer On Earth Tour. The trek rolled into Toledo on Wednesday, where the threat of severe weather gave promoters a shortened window to host music. While a decision was made to have Barenaked Ladies perform and cancel Fastball and Sugar Ray’s sets, the headliners found a way to spotlight their tourmates.

Barenaked Ladies were able to deliver a full 23-song performance at the Toledo Zoo. When the band returned for the encore, they brought out Fastball guitarists Tony Scalzo and Miles Zuniga to lead them through the Texas trio’s 1998 hit “The Way.”

Next, BNL turned over the stage to Sugar Ray for a performance of their 1997 smash “Fly.” Barenaked Ladies watched from the sidelines and danced along as Mark McGrath and company performed their signature song.

“Let me make something abundantly clear: those two bands just came out and rocked those songs on our gear. Unfamiliar instruments, unfamiliar mixes and they kicked ass. Give it up for Fastball and Sugar Ray,” Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson proclaimed.

All three acts loaded the stage to close the night, as all other shows on the tour have ended, with a joint cover of Bryan Adams’ “Summer Of ’69.” Watch footage of the wild conclusion to the concert below:
