Dave Matthews Band returned to the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut on Friday for their 39th performance at the former Meadows Music Theatre. As expected famed saxophonist Branford Marsalis sat-in with the group for the second time this tour, but that was just one of the treats in store for Connecticut DMB fans.

The show began as all shows on the tour have started -with an acoustic set. Matthews opened the night with solo renditions of “Take Me To Tomorrow” and “Butterfly” before guitarist Tim Reynolds came out to join Dave for “Oh.” From there, the rest of the band joined in to complete a set that stuck to setlist staples with the exception of a rare “I’ll Back You Up” to close the 10-song opening stanza.

DMB came out of the gates for the second set with “#41.” Following “Big Eyed Fish” and “Lie In Our Graves,” Matthews headed to keyboard for the debut of “Virginia In The Rain.” Later in the set Marsalis emerged for the full song debut of “Death On The High Seas.” Matthews had discussed how he wrote “Death On The High Seas” in a 2013 video. Branford stuck around for the rest of the set including the tour debut of “Spaceman,” a well-jammed “Jimi Thing” that featured a bit of Prince’s “Sexy M.F.” and the set-closing “Warehouse.” Both “Jimi Thing” and “Warehouse” featured Jumaane Smith on trumpet in addition to Marsalis. The show ended with a “Sister”/”You Might Die Trying” encore. Next up for DMB is a show at Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts tonight.
