Dave Matthews Band Busts Out The Maker With Emmylou Harris

Wednesday saw Dave Matthews Band return to Tuscaloosa for the group’s first performance in the Alabama city since 1994. Matthews opened the show and the acoustic first set by himself with a rendition of “Beach Ball.” Tim Reynolds then came out to accompany Dave on “Bartender.” Towards the end of the set, Harris emerged for the second cover of Bob Dylan’s “Oh, Sister” in as many nights. The acoustic first set came to a close with Dave Matthews Band’s first-ever version of Harris’s “My Antonia” featuring Emmylou on vocals. Matthews lent his talents to the studio version of the song found on Emmylou’s 2000 album Red Dirt Girl.
A classic “Dancing Nancies” > “Warehouse” sequence began the second set. Later in the set, Harris re-emerged for another cover of “Long Black Veil.” Emmylou then helped out on a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker,” which had last been played by DMB on September 3, 2011 (235 shows). The Dave Matthews Band ended the evening with a “The Best Of What’s Around”/”All Along The Watchtower” encore. Matthews and his band now head to Cincinnati for a show at Riverbend on Friday night.
