Frances Bean Cobain has for the first time spoken publicly about her late father, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, since he committed suicide in April 1994. Frances Bean, 22, spoke with Rolling Stone –where she interned at age 15 –in advance of the release of Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, a documentary film written, directed and produced by Brett Morgen about her father which she executive produced for HBO. Her father is featured on the cover of the current Rolling Stone and she spoke with the magazine’s David Fricke for an honest and insightful interview.
Fricke got Cobain to admit she’s not really a fan of Nirvana or other grunge bands (instead favoring the likes of Mercury Rev, Oasis and Brian Jonestown Massacre) though she cries every time she hear the In Utero song, “Dumb.” There’s much more to the riveting interview including insights into her relationship with her father –who she refers to as “Kurt” –and his legacy as well as recent Nirvana reunion of sorts that occurred at her home and her thoughts on the documentary she helped create. The whole interview is worth a read over at RS.

Rolling Stone also shared an exclusive clip from Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck which hits select theaters April 24 and airs on HBO May 4. The clip features a previously unheard Cobain track that Morgan discovered in Cobain’s storage facility in 2013.
