Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit supported singer-songwriter Zach Bryan last night at Detroit’s Ford Field. The Oklahoma native Bryan dropped in on Isbell’s opening set for a performance of “King Of Oklahoma.”

The song appeared on Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s 2023 album, Weathervanes. Jason Isbell wrote “King Of Oklahoma” while in Oklahoma on location filming a role in the Martin Scorsese-directed feature film, Killers Of The Flower Moon.

“I was exposed to a lot of people that I didn’t know, people that I didn’t see every day,” Isbell told NPR of his acting experience. “And I spent a lot of time either on my own or just sort of bumming around Bartlesville, Oklahoma. And it was really great for the songwriting process.”

After sharing the Ford Field stage with Isbell, Bryan — a native of Oologah, Oklahoma — commented about how Isbell should not be opening for him. Bryan also commented about the collaboration on social media.

“Thanks for letting me ruin your song Mr. Isbell,” Bryan wrote. “I respect you and care for your music more than life itself. It was a privilege and an honor to meet a hero.”

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit ended their opening set with a cover of R.E.M.’s The One I Love, which was purportedly Isbell’s first performance of the song since 2011. Isbell recently inducted R.E.M. into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame at a ceremony that saw the Athens, Georgia-born band reunite for the first time in 17 years.
