Widespread Panic brought their Panic En La Playa 2022 destination event to a close on Tuesday with help from Adam MacDougall. The Circles Around The Sun keyboardist joined Panic last night at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico for a three-song encore that included a debut cover of The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues.”
WSP keyboardist JoJo Hermann led his mates through “Greta” to open the band’s fourth and final Panic En La Playa Diez concert after a shout of “Alright, I think we’re gonna make it,” from frontman John Bell. “The jury’s still out on JoJo,” JB quipped before adding, “We’re gonna make it and JoJo’s getting naked.”
The expansive “Greta” gave way to “Pleas,” which was followed by staples “Makes Sense To Me” and “Pilgrims.” Instrumental “Party At Your Mama’s House” then led into the bluesy “Ribs And Whiskey.” Finally, Panic took it down a notch with “Don’t Want To Lose You” before tearing into “Tail Dragger” to close the first set.

“Pigeons” kicked off the final set of the event and featured a fiery guitar solo from Jimmy Herring. Oldie “Postcard” came next along with a take on the beloved “Chilly Water” that spanned nearly 15 minutes. The sextet then served up just their second “May Your Glass Be Filled” since 2019. From there “Airplane” took flight with more Jimmy Herring fretboard fireworks.
The set rolled on with classics “Impossible,” “Hatfield” and “Papa’s Home.” Widespread Panic ended the frame by tearing through Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me.” MacDougall, who was on hand to perform with Circles Around The Sun earlier in the event, emerged with WSP for the evening’s encore. The guest spot marked his third with the group following appearances on October 19, 2014 in Memphis and March 28, 2015 in Las Vegas. Adam played organ and Clavinet while JoJo was on piano for the band’s first take on The Doors‘ Morrison Hotel gem “Roadhouse Blues” to get the encore underway. Widespread Panic and Adam MacDougall closed out Panic En La Playa Diez with a cover of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones and fan-favorite original “Ain’t Life Grand.”
Widespread Panic returns to the stage on February 18 to open a three-night stand at Township Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina. Watch fan-shot video featuring last night’s “Roadhouse Blues” below:
