Little Feat brought out Duane Betts for a surprise appearance on Friday night in Jackson, Wyoming. Betts joined the legendary band for performances of “Blue Sky,” “Southbound” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” at the Center for the Arts.
“A couple of days ago, we got a message from a friend of ours who lives in these parts, and we did not want to miss the chance to play music with him,” Little Feat guitarist Scott Sharrard told the crowd before welcoming Betts to the stage. “Put your hands together for Duane Betts.”
Betts is the son of late Allman Brothers Band co-founding guitarist Dickey Betts, whose compositions were prominently featured during Friday’s collaboration. Both “Blue Sky” and “Southbound” were written by Dickey and have become key parts of the younger Betts’ musical repertoire.
The collaboration also brought together two guitarists with deep connections to the Allman Brothers family. Sharrard spent years as a member of Gregg Allman’s solo band, while Duane Betts has carried forward the musical legacy of his father through his work with Palmetto Motel and other projects. Duane Betts and Palmetto Motel previously opened a string of Little Feat concerts in 2024.
The Jackson collaboration came less than a week after Little Feat welcomed another next-generation member of a legendary rock band. Grahame Lesh, son of late Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, joined Little Feat onstage in Oakland just days earlier.
Betts first joined Little Feat on Friday for “Blue Sky,” with Fred Tackett playing acoustic guitar as Betts took the lead vocal. Betts and Sharrard then traded guitar solos, bringing the Dickey Betts-penned Allman Brothers classic into Little Feat’s orbit.
“Southbound” followed, with Betts and Sharrard alternating lead vocal duties. Tackett switched back to electric guitar as the performance developed into another showcase for the two guitarists.
Little Feat brought Betts back later in the night for “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now,” which closed the concert. Betts delivered a blistering guitar solo toward the end of the song before engaging in a call-and-response exchange with Sharrard. Friday’s guest appearance came as Little Feat continues The Last Farewell Tour, the band’s multi-year farewell excursion.
“What a nice surprise to come off tour and find out the great Little Feat is playing! Always a pleasure, gentlemen. Thanks for having me,” Betts wrote on his social channels following the collaboration.
