Ween Makes Nashville Debut With The Shit Creek Boys In 1996

Last week, Ween thrilled fans by announcing they will perform their 1996 album 12 Golden Country Greats with The Shit Creek Boys at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on October 16 and 17. The shows will mark the band’s Ryman debut. Ween first performed live in Nashville, as per BrownBase, during a tour in support of 12 Golden Country Greats. Fan-shot video of Ween’s Nashville debut can be viewed below.

Ween recorded 12 Golden Country Greats with producer Ben Vaughan at Bradley’s Barn in Nashville between November 2 – 8, 1995. The follow-up to 1994’s Chocolate & Cheese featured contributions from a number of veteran Nashville musicians. Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo recruited some of those musicians, along with a few long-time collaborators, to join a touring band dubbed The Shit Creek Boys. Gener and Deaner were joined by drummer Claude Coleman Jr., pianist Bobby Ogdin, pedal steel wiz Stu Basore, bassist Matt Kohut, fiddler Hank Singer and guitarist Danny Parks for the October 1996 run.

Fittingly, the tour started at Nashville’s 328 Performance Hall on October 4, 1996. Ween & The Shit Creek Boys played a total of 22 songs including all 10 tracks from 12 Country Greats. The ensemble also rolled through a handful of tunes off Chocolate & Cheese and 1992’s Pure Guava as well as the new-at-the-time “Booze Me Up & Get Me High” and classics “Dr. Rock” and “Wavin’ My Dick In The Wind.”
