Warren Haynes Debuts Ashes & Dust Band

On Tuesday night Warren Haynes kicked off the latest leg of his touring in support of Ashes & Dust at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City. The show featured the debut of Haynes’ Ashes & Dust Band which includes drummer Jeff Sipe and Americana act ChessBoxer. Haynes treated fans to a mix of songs from his new album, Ashes & Dust, as well as gems from his time in Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov’t Mule and The Allman Brothers Band with a few choice covers thrown in for good measure.

Haynes and the Ashes & Dust Band began the evening with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tough Mama.” Warren then led the group on the song he wrote about Jerry Garcia – “Patchwork Quilt.” When the guitarist toured with Railroad Earth a rootsy version of “Blue Sky” was part of the repertoire and it appears that trend will continue with the Ashes & Dust Band. The show rolled on with originals “Is It Me Or You,” “Coal Tattoo,” “Stranded In Self Pity” and “Glory Road” before the ensemble played their take on one of the last tunes Haynes brought to The Allman Brothers Band – “Dusk Till Dawn.” One of the evening’s big surprises was a cover of “Skin It Back” by Little Feat which was followed by the set-closing sequence of “No Celebration” > “Instrumental Illness,” “Beat Down The Dust” > “Spots Of Time.”

For the encore, Warren Haynes and the Ashes & Dust Band started off with “Angel Band” and then finished off with two beloved Allman Brothers Band favorites, “Soulshine” and “Jessica.” The tour continues tonight in Indianapolis. Head here for our chat with Ashes & Dust Band drummer Jeff Sipe.
