Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes and longtime collaborator/The Fab Faux guitarist Jimmy Vivino are Love Rocks NYC regulars and shared the stage last night at the seventh annual benefit for God’s Love We Deliver. Not only did the pair star in the evening’s “People Get Ready” finale, they also went toe-to-toe on an incendiary cover of Crosby Stills Nash and Young’s “Almost Cut My Hair” towards the beginning of the marathon concert at The Beacon Theatre in New York City.

David Crosby wrote “Almost Cut My Hair” and sang lead on the version of the song featured on CSNY’s 1970 studio album, Déjà Vu. Warren Haynes had the pleasure of performing “Almost Cut My Hair” with Croz. The collaboration came at the same venue that hosted last night’s show. Crosby, Graham Nash and Phil Lesh joined The Allman Brothers Band for “Almost Cut My Hair” at The Beacon Theatre during a star-studded Tune In To Hep C benefit concert held on July 27, 2011.

“I didn’t know David very well but I cherish the one time we played together, which was at a Hepatitis C Benefit at the Beacon Theater in NYC with the Allman Brothers Band along with David and Graham Nash, Phil Lesh, and Natalie Cole,” Haynes wrote in a remembrance shared following David Crosby's death this past January at age 81. “It was a huge moment for me to duet with David on ‘Almost Cut My Hair’ and to sing Stephen Stills’ part on ‘Find the Cost of Freedom’ along with him and Graham. I’ll never forget it.” Warren noted it was the last time he saw Croz at the end of last night’s “Almost Cut My Hair.”

It was fitting to witness Warren Haynes performing at The Beacon Theatre in March considering the venue hosted Allman Brothers residencies nearly every year from 1996 through 2014. While the Allmans’ lone “Almost Cut My Hair” came with Croz, Haynes played the tune over 40 times with Gov’t Mule dating back to 1998. Scott Metzger, Katie Jacoby and Rob Barraco joined the quartet on their most recent rendition at the 2022 Christmas Jam,

The guitarist handled lead vocals on “Almost Cut My Hair” last night backed by the Love Rocks NYC House Band. Keyboardist Paul Shaffer took center stage before the cover to introduce the song as a tribute to David Crosby. Haynes and Jimmy Vivino each let it rip during the CSNY classic and engaged in a sublime back-and-forth.
