Last night marked the third show of Warren Haynes current tour in support of Ashes & Dust featuring his new Ashes & Dust Band consisting of drummer Jeff Sipe and the members of ChessBoxer. After an an intriguing opening night in Kansas City and a barn-burner in Indianapolis, the ensemble had more tricks up their sleeves for Thursday’s performance at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio.
The Columbus show started innocently enough with a batch of songs played at the first two concerts of the tour including a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” and Ashes & Dust gems “Is It Me Or You,” “Company Man” and “Stranded In Self- Pity,” Haynes and the band dusted off a cover of The Band’s “Ophelia.” Next up was the tour’s second cover of “Skin It Back” by Little Feat (listen to the first). From there the group unearthed “You Ain’t Going Nowhere,” a song Bob Dylan recorded with The Band during the famed Basement Tapes period. The encore featured yet another song The Band recorded with Dylan during the Basement Tapes period and later released on their debut LP – “I Shall Be Released.” Opener Gill Landry helped out on “I Shall Be Released” as he did on “Loser” one night earlier. A version of “Jessica” featuring teases of “Mountain Jam” and “Norwegian Wood” brought the show to a close.
The tour continues tonight in St. Louis. Head here for our chat with Ashes & Dust Band drummer Jeff Sipe. We’re giving away five pairs of tickets to shows on Warren’s current tour. Each of the five winners will get one pair of tickets to the upcoming show of the winner’s choice.
