Guitarist Warren Haynes’ tour with his solo Warren Haynes Band outfit stopped Saturday at The Majestic Ventura Theater in Ventura, California. The concert saw 13-year-old guitarist Saxon Weiss jam with the band on the classic blues number, “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.”
Haynes’ solo tour finds him backed by his Gov’t Mule bandmate Kevin Scott on bass, with drummer Terence Higgins and keyboardist Matt Slocum. Weiss’ sit-in occurred early in the second set, which opened with “From Here On Out,” from Haynes’ 2024 solo album, Million Voices Whisper.
Haynes and his band then rolled through Allen Toussaint’s “From a Whisper to a Scream.” As that song was ending, Haynes primed the audience by welcoming his “friend” Saxon Weiss to the stage.
The young guitarist played a Gibson Les Paul against Haynes’ Gibson ES-355 guitar. Watch the collaboration in Ventura below:
After the guest guitarist’s spot, Haynes and his cohorts continued the second set with The Band’s “Stage Fright.” They moved on with Mule’s “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Tear Me Down,” followed by John Lee Hooker’s “It’s My Own Fault.” Set two ended with Warren’s “Invisible” infused with elements of “Feelin’ Alright,” “Les Brers In A Minor” and “Flashlight.”
Set one contained a similar mix of Haynes’ solo material, Mule favorites and other choice covers. The opening half began with “Man In Motion” and later saw “Sick Of My Shadow“ work in teases of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” and “What Is Hip?” wrapped around “I’ve Been Working.”
