Warren Haynes And Ashes & Dust Band Honor Allen Woody

Last night Warren Haynes brought the Ashes & Dust Band featuring drummer Jeff Sipe and ChessBoxer to the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. On what would have been bassist Allen Woody’s 60th birthday, Haynes honored his late former bandmate with a two song tribute, including a tour debut.
The show began with “Tough Mama” and “Patchwork Quilt” before moving to Ashes & Dust album tracks “Is It Me Or You,” “Beat Down The Dust” and “Company Man.” A pairing of The Allman Brothers Band tunes, “Instrumental Illness” and “Blue Sky” preceded the two-song tribute to Allen. First Haynes, Sipe and ChessBoxer performed Gov’t Mule’s “Banks Of The Deep End” which was originally recorded shortly after Allen’s death. Next came the tour debut of “It Began To Snow” which was also played in for Woody.
Haynes & Co. closed out the show with “Dusk Till Dawn” followed by album cuts “Coal Tattoo” and “Stranded In Self-Pity,” a “Drums” segment, Little Feat’s “Skin It Back” and the LP track “Spots Of Time.” A performance of the ABB’s “Jessica” served as the encore to close out the show.
Haynes next brings the Ashes & Dust Tour to Boston’s Orpheum Theatre on Tuesday, October 6.
