Videos: The Avett Brothers Kick Off 3 Night Red Rocks Run

By Jeffrey Greenblatt Jul 8, 2017 10:06 am PDT

Last night The Avett Brothers continued the summer concert season at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre by kicking off the first of three nights at the gorgeous Morrison, Colorado venue. The Grammy-nominated Americana act handpicked a trio of opening acts for the stand, which last night featured New Orleans’ legend Dr. John, with like-minded bluegrass act Chatham County Line holding down the slot tonight and Shovels & Rope joining for the closer on Sunday.

Last night’s lengthy Red Rock’s opener kicked off with a cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” from there The Avett Brothers got the crowd going with a “Kick Drum Heart,” from their breakthrough album I And Love And You. Next up came three tunes from their 2016 release True Sadness, which was followed by their take on George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth),” which was debuted at the beginning of this year.

The Avetts dug into their extensive catalog last night, offering up songs from ten of their studio albums, including deeper cut tracks like “Famous Flower of Manhattan” from Four Thieves Gone, “If It’s The Beaches” from The Gleam, “Salvation Song” from Mignonette and “Pretty Girl From Chile” from Emotionalism. The band also dipped into their bag of tricks for covers of the Grateful Dead via George Jones “The Race Is On,” Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young,” Harry Belafonte’s “Jump The Line” and Doc Watson’s “Way Downtown.”

The Avett Brothers return to the stage at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre tonight for the second of three sold out shows.
