Umphrey’s Returns To Bay Area For Shows At Fox & Terrapin Crossroads: Photos & Videos

Over the past few years jam sextet Umphrey’s McGee have traditionally played one March show in the Bay Area. Those in the region were treated to a bonus this year as not only did the group return to the Fox Theater in Oakland on Saturday, but UM then headed to the intimate confines of Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael the next night.

After a set from Spafford, the six-piece kicked off this year’s Fox show with a pairing of “There’s No Crying In Mexico” > “Attachments.” The rest of Saturday’s first set was one huge “Bridgeless” sandwich with a rare cover of Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne” among the songs included within. UM began their second set at the Fox with well-jammed takes on “Hurt Bird Bath” and “2×2” ahead of an inventive “1348” > “Hajimemashite” > “Ringo” > “1348” sequence. Up next was a huge bust out as Umphrey’s dusted off their cover of “And Justice For All” by Metallica for the first time since August 1, 2014 – a span of 252 shows. The band ended the evening with “Day Nurse” and “The Floor.”

Umphrey’s played their smallest area gig in years on Sunday, when they performed before a capacity crowd at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads. The evening was a throwback to their earlier days complete with a mostly old school setlist. UM’s TxR debut included rare covers of “Rosanna” by Toto, Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and “Making Flippy Floppy” by Talking Heads. “Higgins,” “In The Kitchen,” “Utopian Fir” and “Tribute To The Spinal Shaft” all featured expansive jams, while the band brought the evening to a close with an emotional “Divisions” encore.
