Las night, Minglewood Hall in Memphis hosted the first of three consecutive Umphrey’s McGee concerts in the state of Tennessee. During their second set Thursday evening, the sextet was joined by North Mississippi Allstars’ drummer Cody Dickinson on an UM original.
Umphrey’s first set began and ended with “Ocean Billy” and was highlighted by the piano-driven Joel Cummins original “Kimble” and a bust out performance of the sparsely covered Radiohead track “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.”
Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” opened set two and segued into the UM classic “40’s Theme.” Cody Dickinson joined the band at toward the latter half of the set, sitting-in on percussion on “Booth Love” and the ensuing jam. Umphrey’s brought the second half to a close with “End Of The Road” and “Bad Friday,” while “Partyin’ Peeps” held down the encore.
Umphrey’s McGee plays again tonight in Knoxville at the Tennessee Theatre and they’ll be at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville on Saturday night for a special concert with musicians from the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
